How does internet matter to us? We live in a modern era where technologies such as The Internet is considered a need and want. Not everyone needs it but majority needs it. Internet somehow completes one’s life. How so? Well when you come to think about it, most of our leisure time, we spend it on The Internet. When we study or work, we used the Internet as well.
I somehow cannot imagine a world without the Internet. True back in the old days before Internet was made, humans were able to live without it. But then, that was back then. Now it’s different. The invention of the Internet isn’t the first and it won’t be the last. We live in a world where people are hungry for knowledge. Through that hunger and curiousity, new inventions will be made and the Internet will be a part of it.
How does Internet help us? How does it change us? Well the big change that the Internet has done was mostly communication. Back in the old days, it was hard to communicate with those that was staying or studying abroad. Letters and telegram was used to keep in touch. Yes, telephone already exist, but then the charges when wanting to call someone abroad is very pricey and it still is. But now the internet has changed that. By using the right kind of media, one can communicate with someone abroad fast and easy. Social media such as Facebook , Twitter and Instagram. One can even go to a chat room such as Window Messenger, Yahoo Messenger and even better Skype. All of these media tools allows anyone to connect with anyone abroad.
Internet is able to bring family and friends together despite the time and distance. But sometimes it can also make one anti-social. Especially when they are out with friends or families. Some people can be too caught up with the Internet to an extent they start ignoring the people that are right in front of them. Some people doesn’t know the boundaries when using the Internet.
Other than that, cell phones nowadays change how one communicates. Cell phones nowadays such as Smartphones includes internet. With a suitable and affordable data plan, one can use the internet anytime, anywhere. Remember back then when cell phones were only made to communicate? Well not anymore. Cell phones nowadays able us to do just about everything. Surf the internet, connect to the social networks account that the user have, play online games, listen to music and even better, they are able to download any suitable file they want for their cell phone. That is how impressive both internet and technology is now.
All of this modernization of technology isn’t the end. As long as we humans live, and as long as the hunger of knowledge exist, it will never end. New things that we not know about or playing in our minds are probably in the making. Who knows. With modern technologies, anything is possible as long as one has the will and brains to do so.
When choosing and buying a cell phone, you of course want what’s best to you and at the same time still able to keep up with the trend. Nowadays, smartphones are the ‘IT’ thing.
Now the trend is either an iPhone or Android such as HTC, Samsung and many more. But now the trends on Android I noticed based on my surrounding, people use are Samsung and I am one of them. But back then, I was still deciding on whether I should get myself an iPhone or Samsung. It was hard deciding for both phones offers a lot of great features. I started researching by using the Internet and asking around both iPhone users and Android users.
After doing a bit of research, I decided to try using iPhone a bit and I be honest, I don’t quite like it. I find it rather complicated. But that doesn’t make Android better than iPhone. It all depends on the user and every user want what’s best for them and what suits them.
I shall compare a bit between iPhone and Android. I shall start on iPhone. It is a rather closed device. When one has an iPhone, every file can only be shared with Apple products only and certain applications that are free for Android users can only be bought through American dollars and it is rather expensive especially when one is from a different country and the currency are different. Other than that, I’m sure everyone that owns smartphones are bound to use this one application called Whatsapp for communication purpose that is free of charge and like every application, it will have something new and in order to gain it, users must update it. Whatsapp currently created some new interesting emoticons. For iPhone users, in order to be able to see the emoticons, they must update the lates Ios 6. As for Android users, all they must do is update the application and they will straight away be able to use and see the new emoticons. But then again, everything has it’s pros and cons. The pros of using an iPhone is that the Ios function is smoother and Apple has total control of the product.
I as an Android user, find Android a total opposite of iPhone. Androids gives the user freedom for it is an open and a free platform kind of device. I find it flexible and easier to use and I able to Bluetooth anything from my phone to different types of phones. But then the cons of using an Android is that my phone tends to heat up and it lags most of the time to an extend I will have to restart my phone.
Everyone has their own opinion when it comes to this. Some users prefer an open devices or closed devices. Sometimes having the right kind of phone completes you for it sometimes describes you are. By seeing the kind of files one have in the phone and the kind of device that one uses, it can somehow tell you what kind of user that individual is. Everyone like what they like.
Social networks such as Facebook and Twitter have been quite popular for quite some time and the number of people using this two social networking website is still increasing everyday. I’m sure everyone finds this two website an entertainment. It has become part of our live for it is mostly used for communication. Despite the time and distance, information is still able to spread globally fast.
But now, social networks are not only use for entertainment such as make new friends and keep in touch with friends abroad. It is also use to spread important communication. Do not underestimate those that don’t watch the news or read newspapers. Nowadays, one can gain information such as Arab Spring through the social networks. Users can gain important information such as these on Twitter and Facebook. On Facebook, people will share article and sometimes update their status about their opinion on the issue. Same goes to Twitter, one can tweet about it and share an article or any information they manage to come across. On Twitter, one can search it up or follow the right account or do both.
“Adherents of the view that digital tool of social networking such as Facebook and Twitter can summon up social revolutions out of the ether.” Evgeny Morozov (2011)
I came across an article that I find rather interesting. Social network plays a big role for it helped Arab Spring plans on doing protest. Countries like Egypt, Tunisia and Yemen uses this to help plan protest and organized just about everything through the social networks.
“We use Facebook to schedule the protest” an active Arab Spring activitist from Egypt announced “and we use Twitter to coordinates, and Youtube to tell the world.”
Social networks have broken the psychological barrier of fear. How so? Well through social networks one can help many to connect and share information. Through this, it has given the people from the Arab world knowledge that they are not alone for there are others experiencing just as much brutality, hardships and of course lack of justice.

After reading this week’s reading, I just found out how brilliant Julian Assange is. He is the founder of WikiLeaks. What is WikiLeaks? What is it about?
WikiLeaks is where you can know all the information that the government has been keeping from the public. Confidential, secrets and sometimes the truth on what actually happen and wasn’t reported on the news truthfully.
Traditional media nowadays are mostly controlled by the government and therefore certain cable news and newspaper companies most of the time published what the government wants and not what the public needs to know. Some people may want to know the truth but aren’t brave enough to do so. But not Julian Assange. He is considered a daredevil for being able to do such things like going all out on revealing what the government had been keeping from the public.
“WikiLeaks is not quite an organization; it is better described as a media insurgency. It has no paid staff, no copiers, no desks, no office. Assange does not even have a home. He travels from country to country, staying with supporters, or friends of friends—as he once put it to me, “I’m living in airports these days.” He is the operation’s prime mover, and it is fair to say that WikiLeaks exists wherever he does.” – Raffi Katchadourian
The statement above shows how much he willing to go on revealing the truth. He is always on the go. He wants the public to open up their eyes and of course think critically. He wants both side to be heard and at the same time to give the public a chance on not being narrow minded. Some of the information that was provided from WikiLeaks are worth knowing and from the website he hopes that it might be able to change the society by stating the truth. What I meant by ‘change’ was to something better.
Yes, truth hurts, but sometimes it is better to know what is actually going on around the world. It is sometimes rather unfair to conceal it with lies and not fully told reports. By stating the truth, it might create awareness. True, sometimes telling the truth won’t be able to solved everything but then again, it all depends on the individual on how they handle the truth. And maybe it might not change the situation at all and will forever remain the same. But at least a chance was given to the public on being able to know what is actually going on.

Where can you update up to only 140 character of words? Which Social Network? Twitter of course.
Twitter is the place where you can update what you do, such as what you eat or drink or sometimes ask on how your followers on how their day is so far and many more. You don’t have to ask only one person on what they are doing. You can asked all your followers at the same time.
“We don’t think it at all moronic to start a phone call with a friend by asking how her day is going. Twitter gives you the same information without your even having to ask.” Steven Johnson
Who would have thought that a social network that only allows you to update up to 140 character of words would be such a hit? Believe it or not, Twitter is not only for us to connect to our friends and gain new one. But it is also the place where we can get information.
Sometimes I consider Twitter as one of the next Search Engine other than Google for you can get almost any kind of information that you want. Such as Entertainment, Politics, Arab Spring and many more. It’s the matter of knowing what to look and which account to follow. But other than that, one can just start by using “#” function, it can help update followers on the news, updates and so much more. People with the same interest uses this as a tool, a socializing tool. By using this tool, news spreads fast and not only in one country, but globally.
I shall state an example, #EligiumMY . It is a new online game in Malaysia and it is slowly growing fast and spreading through the social networks, especially on Twitter. Say one is curious and wants to know what the game is all about, one can just search #EligiumMy and he will be able to get all the information he needs about the online game.
Twitter do come in handy at times. It help spreads on what needs to be spreads and sometimes at the same time help promote on what is new. Like the example I stated above. But one thing I noticed is that, when one has Twitter, they can sometime be rather anti-social when they are out with their family or friends for they are too busy ‘tweeting’ with their followers.
From the anti-social behaviour, you can see how much the social network can sometimes effect an individual when they are outdoors. But then, there are pros and cons for everything. If one knows the boundaries and put aside their cell phone, having a social network account like Twitter isn’t such a bad idea. It’s how one controls oneself.

A Weblog is where people are free to write or in other words, typed down their thoughts. When it comes to blogging, it is often a mixture of what’s going on in a person’s life and what is happening on the Web. It is like a diary. An alternative diary where people don’t quite have to care what other people think when reading the blog. re Some may criticize it, but all the bloggers have to do is just ignore it for the comments they receive are also their own thoughts and their own point of view.
A Weblog is not only a diary that one can use to pour their hearts out. It is also where anyone is free to typed down on what they think about issues, trends. Especially issues that are “hot” on the news. Weblog nowadays is one of the most important media used, especially for those that loves to write.
“We want a world where global publishing is effortless. We want a world where you don’t have to ask for help or permission to write out loud.” – Clay Shirky (2002)
Through Weblog, anyone is free to typed down what they want without anyone’s consent. Yes, this is where mass amateurization takes place. It takes place because of the amount of freedom one can have by Weblog.
As you all know, the traditional media concept is seen as one-to-many. Meaning, one company caters to a mass audience. As for Weblogs, it is seen as many-to-many. That can sometime contains opinions, thoughts and maybe different kind of news that is completely different from what we read in the newspapers. In a publishing company, professionals are assigned to report or write about this specific news or article. Which only makes us see things only from one view and different angle. Weblogs, is a total opposite for it contains different kind of news and sometimes the truth. Some news that comes from the Publishing company aren’t always true. Sometimes they sugar-coated their words and only write down what their editor want or only to what the readers should only know about and nothing more than that. Sometimes through Weblog, one can see clearer because they read from many different angles and opinions.
There are many things on what one can do through Weblog, it all depends on the individual. True there are pros and cons on this. The cons is that maybe sometimes what is written in the Weblog might not always be true, but then same goes to newspapers and news cable. Nothing is certain. Some truths can never be certain.

This week’s reading would be on ‘The Cultural Logic of Media Convergence, International Journal of Cultural Studies’ Henry Jenkins. We are now in era where media convergence is more than simply a technological shift.
I will state on what I found rather interesting in this reading. Back when cell phones was made, it was only made and used for communication. But now, in an advance era we are living in, cell phones now are used for different kind of ways. It allows users to play games, download information from the internet, receive and sent photographs or text messages.
Not only that, it can also be performed through other media appliances. I’m sure almost everyone has a cell phone that allows users to listen to music that they downloaded from the internet. Yes, the beauty of cell phones nowadays. It can also become your own portable MP3 player at the same time. Other than that, users can also listen to their favourite radio station through their cell phone and even go to Youtube to watch and listen to their favourite video clips and of course the use of GPS.
“Media convergence is more than simply a technological shift. Convergence alters the relationship between existing technologies, industries, markets, genres and audience.” A quote by Henry Jenkins.
It is indeed amazing on how much users can do just by using one device. The brilliance and creativity of makers for being able to create cell phones or better known as smart phones can also at the same time help users spend less money. Why spend a lot of money on an MP3 when you can listen to music through your smart phone? The ability of able to get things done for work and of course for leisure time through one device and that is cell phone or smart phones are incredible.
We are embracing media convergence and as much as we sometimes don’t like the idea for doing so but it is part of our daily lives and it has indeed changed how one communicates.
